Critic Rating

Professor Phil Ford and writer J. F. Martel host a series of conversations on art and philosophy, dwelling on ideas that are hard to think and art that opens up rifts in what we are pleased to call "reality."

"Weird Studies started in 2018, but it has the spirit of an older era. Listening to Ford and Martel is like bumping into two of your inspirational professors who are slightly stoned at the end of a party. Enthusiastic, rambling, unexpected, somewhat pretentious. It’s a taste of being back at university with all the enlightenment and occasional irritation that implies. But amid all this there is genuine insight and curious facts culled from both men’s eclectic erudition. I have a relatively high tolerance of pretension and the stuff about psychogenic fugues tested even my tolerance. But for a flavour of something different, older, less produced, less filtered, it’s unbeatable."
