Critic Rating

With gripping stories every other Thursday, Question Everything is a show for anyone who's ever felt confused, frustrated, or misled by the news they rely on. At a time when distrust in the media is at an all time high, when so many believe that journalism is failing, Question Everything is a real-time quest to try and make journalism better.  In the middle of making his second hit podcast, reporter Brian Reed got sued. "Question Everything is a heartfelt endeavor, earnest in its desire to solve a very real problem. ...four episodes in, which is certainly early days, the show feels too inside baseball. Perhaps this is because Reed has envisioned it as a truly long-term project, and he is still at the stage of setting the scene. Regardless, it’s hard to imagine why people who completely distrust the news media would be attracted to a podcast so heavily focused on journalists swapping war stories. Whether Question Everything can reach them is still to be seen. Until then, Reed’s will be just another voice in the echo chamber."

"Self-indulgent? Well yes, it is a bit. There’s nothing journalists love more than to sit around with other journalists talking about their Very Important Work — and I say that as a journalist who has been known to do exactly that. There is a wider context to Question Everything, though, and that is the rise of online misinformation and the growing distrust of mainstream journalism. You hope this bigger picture will be more apparent in upcoming episodes in which Reed will talk to investigative journalist Barton Gellman and tell stories of reporters who have been threatened or prosecuted."

"Most compelling is Reed’s vulnerability and willingness to face scrutiny and question his own practices. Question Everything uses the tools of journalism to re-examine journalism. There’s no sugar-coating here; Reed gets brutally honest about the messiness of journalism."

"An admirable, open-hearted wrestle with a vital question – with an impressive first episode that sees Reed face one of his biggest critics."
