"Lara said she hasn't heard a con artist story quite like this. Kevin liked how "#1 Dad" teetered between forgiveness and suspicion."

"As a character study, #1 Dad is fascinating....over several electrifying episodes, they have an honest conversation, talking about their estrangement, his shady business practices and why he is the way he is...Perhaps the most startling aspect of this series comes not just in hearing Vider slough off 24 years of sadness and fury and slowly succumbing to his septuagenarian father’s charms, but in how we are won over by him too."

"Gary is a warm presence who does a great job of conveying the conflicting emotions he’s dealing with. The scope and scale of his father’s lifestyle is genuinely remarkable to behold...Unfortunately, there’s plenty of repetition, a lot of points from previous episodes being hammered home...Nevertheless you can’t help but wonder how it’s going to turn out."

"...part mystery-thriller, part comedy, and allegedly partially a little true-crime adjacent. What is definitely true is that this is a compelling piece of podcasting, from a master storyteller, with heart, heartbreak, and comedy throughout."

"Gary is a dynamic host, the stories are unbelievable, and the format is fun. Gary’s wife is on the mic, and it is she who points out that Manny liked to sue everyone, and he does hear this podcast he’ll “sue everyone involved.” And I’m pretty sure he will, Gary’s mission is to talk to his dad for the first time in a long time and see if he’s changed, and this podcast is building toward that."
