Wiser Than Me with Julia Louis-Dreyfus

5.0/5

Critic Rating

Julia Louis-Dreyfus returns for Season 2 of her award-winning podcast, Wiser Than Me™. Each week, she has funny, touching, personal conversations with iconic older women who are brimming with the kind of unapologetic attitude and wisdom that only comes with age. Julia sits at the feet of some extraordinary teachers this season (discover who in the trailer), and of course her 90-year-old mom, Judy. Tune in to laugh, cry and get wise. "(Season 2) Dreyfus is a warm, non-sycophantic host, as brashly funny as her old Seinfeld character, Elaine Benes. I loved her recalling a terrible audition for the 1986 movie About Last Night…, and watching the woman who got the part, Demi Moore, twirling out of the room. “Ah fuck,” she deadpans, “I’m fucked.”…"

"(Season 2) It’s a clear, straightforward premise for Wiser Than Me, in which Louis-Dreyfus interviews great women over 70. The discussion moves on to looking back at your life from the perspective of your sixties... …"

"...she picks the grey matter of older and wiser women. Her inaugural guest was Jane Fonda, 85, who reflects on her decades-spanning career, fitness, activism, and fantasy funeral. That’s a tough act to follow but author Isabel Allende does just that, followed by Fran Lebowitz, Diane von Furstenberg and Carol Burnett among others. Season Two will “drop” soon, so expect more megawatt sages.…"

"Fair play to Julia Louis-Dreyfus: she nailed the concept with Wiser Than Me. And then she leveraged her not insignificant celebrity clout and nailed the guests too. There’s an honesty too to the host’s patter: Louis-Dreyfus may not be the slickest interviewer nor even the funniest, but she’s disarmingly open about her experiences – her narcissistic father, her breast cancer diagnosis, losing a baby late in a pregnancy – and her guests respond with their own personal revelations."

"Julia’s amazing new adventure in the world of podcasting is just one more example of how mature women – or, dare we say it – women in their prime, are positive and inspirational role models to their peer group and to younger generations. She brings humor and frank honesty to the conversation, opening up a light, relatable, and memorable dialog."

"...this feels like a show that Julia wanted to make. The rawness of this episode was balanced with a kind of polish that made it adoring and human."

"There are just way too many quotable moments from their conversation, I listened twice. And I’m with Julia, I want to hear more stories like this. She really sets the tone of the show right off the top and you feel her excitement, passion, and the fun style she’s bringing to it. Beyond that, I absolutely LOVE the way they edited together the technical difficulties in this episode. They certainly could’ve cut it out, but I think it’s a better, more relatable, and more memorable episode because of it and that’s a sign of a production team that knows great storytelling."
