I’ve spent over 20 years studying the emotions and experiences that bring meaning and purpose to our lives, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s this: we are hardwired for connection, and connecting requires courage, vulnerability, and conversation. I want this to be a podcast that’s real, unpolished, honest, and reflects both the magic and the messiness of what it means to be human. Episodes will include conversations with the people who are teaching me, challenging me, confusing me, or maybe even ticking me off a little. "The first season is a bit patchy: you have to get used to Brown’s Texan y’all-drawl, and the advertisements can be irritating. But the two-parter she does with Harriet Lerner, the renowned psychologist who wrote the seminal book, The Dance of Anger, and 2017’s Why Won’t you Apologise?, is a sort of masterclass in emotional intelligence, important for people who find it hard to utter an apology and those who feel they deserve one. When you think about it, never has there been a more important time to consider how we treat our dearest. We’re uncertain in this pandemic, we’re tired, we’re spending too much time together AND WE DON’T KNOW WHEN THIS WILL EVER END. I’m sorry about the caps. Just a bit stressed."

"Brown has dedicated her career to researching and speaking about vulnerability and courage, and if ever there was a time for the voice of someone who’s done her homework on these subjects, it is now. I like the formula Brown follows for these solo episodes. She infuses her own research and summarizes others’ influential work in social science with her Texas warmth, owns her own imperfections and mistakes, and makes the perspective she’s earned by deep, thorough research feel personal and relatable. You don’t have to dive into her other work to connect with the podcast. These are conversations in the key of COVID, but they also segue naturally into revelations on love affairs and transformations, patriarchy and parenting."

"Oprah-endorsed self-help queen, academic and bestselling author Brené Brown hosts this podcast, essentially an anxiety-quelling Ted talk in audio form. If that sounds worthy, perhaps it’s exactly the boost we need right now..."

"Unlocking Us does a great job of developing her theories on vulnerability and courage, and has arrived as a timely comfort during our current crisis."
