"(Series 3) ...Theroux managed to get some interesting stuff out of her. In a crowded sleb-interview market, Theroux is still one of the best. …"

"His “I’m a bit clueless, me” shtick is a little overplayed, but there’s no denying it works. However, it’s the combination of his humoured wheeze and contagious joy in human interaction that makes these deep dives – they often clock in at well over an hour long – strangely easy listening. Theroux meets his guests with empathy combined with a sharp eloquence, and he will bring up thorny subjects, though without imposing them on his guests, and never combatively."

"Theroux is among the best interviewers in the world...They were funny and sharp sparring partners, sometimes poignant, and often switching between who was interviewing who. It felt like a genuine conversation between clever equals…"

"It’s not as good, I think, although its hard to put your finger on exactly why. Some strange, alchemical relationship joins a broadcaster and corporation. There is just something so quintessentially BBC about thoughtful, softly spoken Theroux. Spotify feels a bit downmarket for him. Theroux is still a genius, obviously."

"Theroux asking questions of an eclectic, if hardly stellar, line-up...Theroux’s probing prompts disclosure, but it is the resilient, redoubtable Twain who is the star of this encounter. Journalistic qualms aside, however, Shania (real-name Eilleen) is a knockout interviewee. Her extraordinary rags-to-riches story is recounted with grace, clear-eyed candour and only minimal nudging from Theroux. Although I’m uninspired by the prospect of some of Theroux’s future subjects, I will listen, without prejudice, and be prepared to be won over."

"The Louis Theroux Podcast is, to all intents, exactly the same as his previous BBC celebrity interview show. The only changes are that we’re given a little more Louis...diligent research...It’s great. Theroux is terrific at his job, as we all know, and this is a great interview."

"Not much has changed in his new Spotify show – it’s still a charming, personal attempt to get to the essence of celebrity guests. "
