A satirical sitcom about a clash of cultures and personalities in 19th century India, starring Meera Syal and Jennifer Saunders. The useless Henry and his formidable mother the Dowager arrive in a remote province of India where Henry is excited to be the new Governor, despite having no real idea of how to do so apart from talking English very loudly and slowly to the locals. The Maharajah and his mother the Rajmata have plans in store for this unwelcome British presence, which will ultimately turn the lives of all involved upside down.... "...the humour is broad and tremendously silly; clichés are embraced (curry, cricket, sweat, orientalism). The pace is brisk, the sound superb and the performances are standout: particularly the show’s rival matriarchs, colonial blueblood Saunders (her two-syllabled “Inja” is spot-on) and the silkily seductive, scheming Syal. Stick with it and it sweeps you along."
