"The hosts are fluent, authoritative and accessible, though they haven’t yet got the spark of other Goalhanger double acts such as Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook (The Rest Is History), or Marina Hyde and Richard Osman (The Rest Is Entertainment), who do a good line in convivial chit-chat. Here there’s a slight sense of listeners being talked at, which may or may not be due to an over-reliance on scripts, rather than two hosts being in conversation. ...minor grumble is that Goalhanger pods and their format — two experts talking on a theme — are beginning to feel samey and pedestrian."

"...fine but surprisingly academic. Not until episode two...does the story take off. Both Olusoga and Churchwell are good: chatty and fluent, with information packed into every sentence. But as well as more grabby human stories there’s a need for some decent production: some energy and contrast; some audio drop-ins (archive sound? A short musical sting?). The overall dynamic is… steady. It makes the listening experience airless, like an afternoon lecture in a hot room. Your mind wanders."
