Dan Carlin's Hardcore History

5.0/5

Critic Rating

In "Hardcore History" journalist and broadcaster Dan Carlin takes his "Martian", unorthodox way of thinking and applies it to the past. Was Alexander the Great as bad a person as Adolf Hitler? What would Apaches with modern weapons be like? Will our modern civilization ever fall like civilizations from past eras? This isn't academic history (and Carlin isn't a historian) but the podcast's unique blend of high drama, masterful narration and Twilight Zone-style twists has entertained millions of listeners.

John Phipps • The Spectator Dec 12, 2020

"Dan Carlin’s low American growl is one of the world’s best voices... I have no interest in military history — I don’t know the date of the Battle of Waterloo — but Carlin is a podcasting Midas and everything he touches turns into something interesting. I would be happy listening to him read the phone book."

Epic Levi • Epic Grit May 25, 2016

"Dan Carlin has the perfect background to generate a history podcast. He has experience in broadcast journalism, first in television, then as a talk-radio host. He also has a B.A. in History, so his enthusiasm for the subject is evident. The result is that he has the perfect mix of experience, skills, and passion to craft compelling narratives for historical topics in audio form. This podcast is all epic grit. You must listen to it."

"Perhaps Carlin’s most impressive feat is his ability to wrangle complex strands of historical record into an easily digestible narrative."
